Discover Mandalay through regenerative travel. From local markets to monastery lunches, support livelihoods while insight into Myanmar life.

Mandalay, the cultural heart of Myanmar and the country’s last royal capital, is known for its vibrant markets and rich food heritage. In this journey, food becomes more than just a highlight—it is a way to connect with people, traditions, and place, while supporting a more regenerative way of travel.

We start early in the morning with a visit to a busy local vegetable market, where farmers and vendors sell fresh, seasonal produce from nearby areas. Breakfast follows with a traditional Nan Gyi Thoke—one of Mandalay’s most popular dishes—made with thick rice noodles, chicken curry, toasted chickpea flour, and a mix of local spices, offering an authentic taste of the region.

We then take a walk through a lively neighborhood, where you can see artisans making Mandalay sweets, local cakes, and fresh noodles using traditional methods passed down over generations. This experience gives a glimpse into daily life while directly supporting small, family-run businesses and preserving local craftsmanship.

Continuing into the countryside, we stop at a small farm to better understand where the food comes from and how local agriculture supports the community. This is where regenerative travel comes into focus—by engaging with local producers, respecting seasonal practices, and strengthening the connection between travelers and the land.

A homemade Mandalay lunch is served at a lesser-known monastery, offering a simple yet meaningful cultural experience. Guests can make a donation and help plant a Sein Ta Lone mango tree—one of Myanmar’s most loved mango varieties. This small action contributes to future harvests and supports the local community. As the local saying goes, “The best time to plant a mango tree was 10 years ago; the second best time is today.”

This journey is not just about discovering Mandalay—it is about traveling with intention. By choosing experiences that give back, support local livelihoods, and respect cultural traditions, this itinerary reflects Khiri Travel’s commitment to regenerative travel—leaving places better than we found them.
