Journey through Myanmar’s highlands—cycle from Kalaw to Inle Lake, meet elephants, trek with the Pa O, and experience authentic local life.

Nestled in the scenic highlands of Myanmar, Kalaw and Inle Lake offer more than breathtaking landscapes — they reveal the warmth and authentic spirit of local communities still untouched by the rush of modern life.

The journey began in the misty hills of Kalaw, where everything turned a lush green on arrival. Perched at over 4,200 feet above sea level, Kalaw is a peaceful hill town surrounded by rolling valleys and pine forests. The Khiri Travel Myanmar team visited the Kalaw Elephant Conservation Camp, crossing winding mountain roads to reach this special sanctuary.

Although the rain made the usual 4–5 hour elephant trekking tour impossible, an insightful local guide shared stories about the elephants, sustainable conservation practices, and tree-planting efforts. A delicious Nepalese-style lunch at the camp completed this memorable experience.

Back in town, guests stayed overnight at the historic Kalaw Heritage Hotel, welcoming visitors since 1903. After a restful night in the cool mountain air, the journey continued from Kalaw to Aung Ban, where the team hopped on bicycles for a scenic ride to Indein Village. The 4–5 hour cycling route passed stunning views of Pa O villages and local bamboo workshops, offering an intimate look into the region’s crafts and way of life.

Lunch was hosted by a welcoming local family on the peaceful waters of Inle Lake, where every meal felt farm-fresh and flavors were vibrant. No visit to Inle is complete without tasting Shan noodles — a beloved local specialty.

The adventure ended with a Pa O day trek, an immersive 5-hour hike through green hills, narrow trails, and remote villages where mint grows wild along the roadside. After climbing to a hilltop summit with panoramic views, the group enjoyed trying on traditional Pa O clothing, capturing the essence of the region’s proud culture before heading back to the lake to rest and reflect on an unforgettable journey.
