Remarkable Sustainable Tours in Indonesia
Khiri Indonesia tries to find many different ways for our travellers to leave as small as possible a footprint behind. Therefore, in Indonesia as in all our destinations, we support projects which make life for the local people a bit better and where life circumstances for the less fortunate are being improved.
Take for example the project from New Zealand, where they train women to be local guides at the foot of Mt Rinjani. After the success of the project, Katni, who was the first woman in this project, became a trekking guide to Mount Rinjani in 1995. After the New Zeeland project left Senaru, Katni then opened her own trekking operator called Rinjani Women Adventure and continues to teach the local women how to be guides and take care of guests. She also works with some local NGOs for getting help to teach the women English.
This trekking operator is located at the foot of Mt Rinjani, North Lombok. The mountain itself is the second highest mountain of Indonesia, at 3726 metres. Many tourists visit this stunning, beautiful and laid-back island for its culture, peacefulness and natural environment. One of many people’s bucket list of things to do on this island is to climb the holy mountain Rinjani.
If you don’t intend to climb the mountain, Katni and her team offer several tours to choose from during your stay in Senaru. Think of visiting the stunning waterfalls of the Tiu Kelep for an amazing swimming experience, or visit the wonderful rice fields and the local villages with such a rich history. The area is surrounded by coffee fields, plantations and rice fields and has a rich water system where the local villagers benefit from growing their crops.
The women in this area are now slowly becoming independent from the income their husbands make, and making their families’ lives better and more sustainable. Katni now employs dozens of women and is one huge example of the kind of sustainable Indonesia project that Khiri Travel stands for. We truly love working with people like her!
One other enterprise we would like to shine a light on which is implementing sustainable business practices is the Mathis Lodge in Amed, East Bali. Besides the stunning location and the miraculous view, the friendly staff will welcome and assist you during your stay. Every week the Mathis Lodge has cleanups in and around the surroundings of the hotel area. All staff join the cleanup to ensure the location is clean and returned to its own beauty.
The area is remarkable and a wonderful location to escape the tourist sites of Bali. As well as having a refilling station for your personal water bottles, this resort uses local suppliers for over 80% of its purchasing.
Khiri Travel Indonesia is constantly busy making our trips more sustainable. We leave no stone unturned in contribution to ensuring Indonesia will stay a top destination for sustainable tourism.
