In the heart of Sri Lanka’s cultural capital, Khiri invites visitors to step beyond the usual tourist trail and into a truly immersive local experience. The journey begins with a visit to a welcoming local home in Kandy, where a passionate Kandyan dance master warmly greets participants as their guru for the day. Here, there is an introduction to the graceful yet powerful movements of traditional upcountry dancing, locally known as Udarata Netum — Sri Lanka’s oldest and most revered classical dance form.
Originating from ancient ritual practices performed to invoke blessings, healing, and protection, Udarata Netum later evolved under royal patronage during the Kandyan Kingdom. Today, it remains a proud symbol of Sri Lanka’s cultural heritage, characterized by strong footwork, athletic leaps, expressive gestures, and dynamic body movements performed to the commanding rhythms of Kandyan drums.

As the cultural centre of Sri Lanka’s hill country, Kandy is famous for its vibrant evening dance performances. While these shows offer a glimpse into tradition, Khiri’s private experience offers something far more meaningful: a hands-on, personal, and deeply insightful encounter. Guided step by step by a local expert, participants learn the fundamental movements and rhythmic patterns before gradually building confidence and coordination.
The experience soon comes alive with the rhythmic beats of Kandyan drums. Their powerful and layered sounds create a unique energy that naturally encourages movement, bringing the dance to life and energising both body and spirit. Along the way, the dance master also performs a breathtaking fire dance, delivering a surprise finale that exceeds expectations and leaves lasting memories.

After the performance, there is time to relax and enjoy traditional Kandyan sweets, including Peni Walalu (treacle bangles) and Kokis (crispy crackers), served with a comforting cup of plain tea, just as locals enjoy it.
The experience concludes with warm farewells, leaving lasting memories of cultural connection, joyful movement, and authentic local hospitality — a perfect balance of activity and indulgence. Connect with Khiri at [email protected] and let the journey begin.
