Trek through Luang Prabang’s jungles and villages, tasting Lao Loum, Khmu, and Hmong cuisine while immersing in rich traditions and culture.

Escape the ordinary and embark on a unique foodie adventure in the heart of Luang Prabang province. This isn’t just a tour; it’s a deep dive into local culture, where every meal is a story and every village a new chapter. Guided by an expert who will help you understand the customs and traditions of each community, you’ll travel by boat, trek through jungles and rice paddies, and be welcomed into the homes of three distinct ethnic groups: the Lao Loum, the Khmu, and the Hmong.

From Market to Village Weaving

Our journey begins at the bustling morning market in Luang Prabang, a vibrant showcase of local life and fresh produce. Here, vendors sell everything from jungle vegetables and local spices to fresh fish and fragrant herbs. It’s the perfect place to get a true taste of local life and, of course, to try a variety of authentic snacks and street food before we set off.

After what, a 40-minute boat ride takes us to a village renowned for its delectable Khao Kop (crispy rice cakes). Depending on the season (mainly from November to January), you might also get to see the famous river weed snacks, kaiphen, being made.

A short walk leads us to our first Lao Loum village, where we’ll stop to witness a fascinating process: how a simple cotton flower is transformed into a thread, naturally dyed, and finally, woven into a beautiful, traditional Lao skirt. Throughout this process, your guide will explain the cultural significance of traditional weaving and will be there to help you ask questions of the villagers. After this cultural immersion, we’ll continue our trek to a second Lao Loum village where we’ll spend the night. As evening falls, we’ll gather for a communal dinner, sharing stories and savoring the authentic flavors of Lao Loum cuisine.

Trekking to the Spirits of the Khmu

Our day starts with a traditional Lao Loum breakfast: sticky rice, boiled vegetables, grilled meat, and a spicy dip called jeow. The flavor of the jeow changes with the seasons, with varieties made from eggplant, mushrooms, tomatoes, or even local bugs!

After breakfast, we’ll begin our trek through lush jungle and sprawling rice fields to a welcoming Khmu village. Upon arrival, a traditional Baci ceremony will be held in your honor. Your guide will explain the deep meaning of this beautiful ritual, which is believed to recall the 32 spirits of the body, bringing luck and prosperity to all. It is a ceremony reserved for the most special moments in a person’s life, and a true honor to witness.

For dinner, you’ll be presented with a truly unique culinary experience: Ourrou Kané. With your guide’s help, you can learn about the Khmu people’s resourcefulness and their connection to the land. Depending on the season and the hunt, this traditional Khmu stew might contain… rat! Cooked with a blend of herbs and served with rice, it’s a meal born of necessity and a testament to their way of life.

Hmong Traditions and a Taste of Luang Prabang

Our final day of trekking takes us downhill, where a tuk-tuk awaits to transport us to a Hmong village. The community will greet us with a special meal: Qaib Tsaws Tshuaj, a chicken and herb soup celebrated for its health benefits.

But the cultural immersion doesn’t stop there. The villagers, with your guide’s translation, will introduce us to their traditional instruments, including the Qeej, a mouth organ, and perform some traditional music. It’s a rhythmic and soulful end to our village-hopping adventure.

After a good night of rest, we’ll take a final tuk-tuk ride back to Luang Prabang. Our journey culminates in a well-deserved lunch at one of the city’s most reputable restaurants, nestled by a UNESCO lily pond. Here, you’ll indulge in a tasting menu featuring the finest traditional Luang Prabang dishes, a perfect final meal to reflect on the incredible flavors and cultures we’ve experienced.
