Explore the colonial charm of Kalaw. From heritage churches and ethnic markets to a nostalgic rail journey through the hills.
In the misty hills of Kalaw, this experience invites travelers to step into a slower rhythm—where colonial heritage, local culture, and soft adventure come together in one seamless journey.
The day begins at a countryside lodge farm, where simple moments—greeting gentle cows, playful goats, and free-roaming chickens—offer a warm introduction to highland life. From here, a short transfer leads into Kalaw’s historic downtown. Once a British hill station, Kalaw still carries echoes of its colonial past, with charming heritage buildings and tree-lined streets that reflect its former role as a cool-climate retreat.
A highlight is the visit to Christ the King Anglican Church, built in 1906 during British rule. Set among pine trees, the church stands as one of Kalaw’s best-preserved colonial landmarks, known for its simple stone architecture and tranquil setting—offering both historical insight and a quiet pause in the journey.

The exploration continues at Kalaw’s central market, a lively hub of daily life. On the rotating 5-day market, the scene becomes especially vibrant as ethnic hill tribe communities gather, dressed in intricately woven textiles and adorned with distinctive handmade jewelry. It’s a rich, authentic encounter with the cultural diversity of Shan State.
After lunch, the journey takes a nostalgic turn at Kalaw Railway Station. Boarding a local train Thazi, travelers enjoy a scenic ride through rolling hills before disembarking at Myin Daik, perched at 4,465 feet above sea level. This quiet stop, home to a historic British-built station, offers a glimpse into a slower, more traditional way of life, with opportunities for genuine interaction with the local community.
The final stretch is a rewarding walk along the railway line back toward the lodge. Covering approximately 3.8 miles (2–3 hours), the trail winds through open plains, gentle hillsides, and farmland—an ever-changing landscape that brings the journey to a peaceful and memorable close.
