Discover regenerative travel in Bang Kachao through forest restoration, tree planting, indigo dyeing, and a community lunch.

Bang Kachao is a remarkable green oasis amid Bangkok’s rapid urban development. Often known as the “lungs of Bangkok,” this unique area is rich in biodiversity and natural beauty, helping to purify the air, reduce pollution, and maintain the ecological balance of the city. Beyond its environmental importance, Bang Kachao offers a refreshing escape into nature and a glimpse into the communities working to preserve this precious green space.

The Suan Pa Ked Nom Klao Community Forest was established in 2006, when a small group of local residents came together to protect and restore their surrounding green space. In 2017, it became a registered community enterprise, with support from both the public and private sectors. Since then, the community has developed tree nurseries, water management systems, and reforestation initiatives while creating sustainable livelihoods through eco-tourism. Today, the forest is home to more than 100 plant species and over 49 bird species, serving as both a natural learning centre and a meaningful eco-tourism destination.

This half-day experience offers an opportunity to contribute directly to the restoration of the forest through three hands-on activities. Begin with the waterways by making EM (Effective Microorganism) Balls, a natural method used by the community to help improve water quality. After creating your own EM Balls, release them into the local canals and leave a fresh batch behind for the community to use in their ongoing conservation efforts.

Continue into the forest, where you will help create a living legacy by selecting and planting a native sapling under the guidance of local community members. Finally, discover the traditional art of indigo tie-dye, learning age-old binding techniques to create your own naturally dyed textile.

After completing your conservation activities, sit down to enjoy a traditional local lunch prepared by the community, bringing the experience to a close with an authentic taste of local life.

More than simply visiting Bang Kachao, this experience allows you to connect with the local community and discover the people, traditions, and conservation efforts that help protect this unique green oasis. By taking part in these hands-on activities, you are not only learning from the community but also contributing your time and effort to its ongoing environmental initiatives. It is a meaningful way to travel with purpose, sharing an experience with local people while leaving a small, positive contribution behind for the community and future generations.
